PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital depth sounder module which has a high sensitivity and a wide measuring range and a sensing method using the digital depth finder module. SOLUTION: The digital depth sounder module comprises a sonar carrier wave generation means, a band pass filter, a preamplifier which is possible to obtain the high sensitivity and the wide measuring range, a digitized superheterodyne sensor, and an A/D converter for an intermediate frequency generation. The digital depth finder module controls a gain of the preamplifier and consists of a programmable logic device and a microprocessor which filter the intermediate frequency digitally. In the detection method, the digital depth finder module receives the sonar carrier wave, filters the sonar carrier wave by the band pass filter, amplifies the filtered sonar carrier wave by the preamplifier, transfers the amplified sonar carrier wave to the A/D converter, generates the intermediate frequency of the sonar carrier wave, controls the preamplifier and the A/D converter by using the programmable logic device, filters the sonar carrier wave digitally and senses the sonar carrier wave digitally.
