PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating apparatus and a coating method capable of continuously supplying a large amount of sealing material in a uniform mixed state at all times, enhancing the efficiency of the coating operation remarkably and, moreover, enhancing the quality and the efficiency of the operation remarkably also in the manufacture of a PDP etc. SOLUTION: The coating apparatus is provided with a tank unit A which feeds frit glass (sealing material) 1 to be applied to a panel by a constant quantity while stirring the same, a coating head B which extrudes and delivers the frit glass 1 fed from the tank unit A, by the constant quantity by means of an extruding means 24 from an opened nozzle 21A, a by-pass path R3 for connecting part of a supply path R1 with a pipe of the tank unit A, a switching valve V3 disposed on part of the by-pass path R3, a return path R2 for returning the frit glass 1 to the tank unit via the supply path R1 and the coating head B without feeding the frit glass 1 from the tank unit A to the by-pass path R3 on the stand-by state that the frit glass 1 is not delivered from the nozzle 21A of the coating head B and pressure regulating valves V1, V2 which are disposed on the inlet side and the outlet side of the coating head B.
