PURPOSE: A method for controlling optimal aspect ration in accordance with DVD source and a DVD player using a controlling method thereof are provided to set a display device in 4:3 optimal mode, and to sense an aspect ratio of an inputted DVD source, then to change an input signal of the DVD source according to the sensed aspect ratio, thereby outputting a screen having an optimal aspect ratio. CONSTITUTION: A mode setup portion(404) sets an output mode of a DVD player to an optimal mode. A receiver(408) receives a DVD source inputted by being encoded at predetermined aspect ratio. A sensor(406) senses the aspect ratio of the received DVD source. A controller(400) automatically converts the aspect ratio of the DVD source according to the sensed aspect ratio of the DVD source, and outputs the converted aspect ratio. The controller(400) includes an input signal conversion module(401), which automatically converts the input signal of the DVD source to have a 1.77:1 aspect ratio if the DVD input source has a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, and outputs the converted aspect ratio.
