PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively prevent double feeding or idling of a paper feeder by changing pressure contact force according to the paper feeding status. SOLUTION: The paper feeder for separating and feeding sheets of paper one by one from a paper sheet bundle A comprises a swing arm 12 whose tip swings vertically above the uppermost surface of the paper sheet bundle A, an auxiliary arm 16 movably connected to the tip of the swing arm 12, a paper feeding roller 11 pivoted at the lower end part of the auxiliary arm 16 for coming into contact with the uppermost surface, an elastic member 13 for constantly giving downward elastic force to the tip of the swing arm 12, and a rotational drive transmitting mechanism axially supported by the tip of the swing arm 12 for transmitting rotational drive force to the paper feeding roller 11.
