PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric power steering device for absorbing a shock generated at a rack moving end of a rack and pinion type movement conversion mechanism provided with a variable gear ratio mechanism without damaging each mechanism of a power transmission system. SOLUTION: When a rack shaft 21 provided with a tooth part meshing with the tooth part of a pinion shaft 22 is moved in an "a" direction of an arrow due to the rotation of the pinion shaft 22 by steering, tie rods 24, 25 coupled with both ends of the rack shaft 21 are also moved in the "a" direction of the arrow and a direction of a wheel is changed. Even when the wheel runs on a curbstone or is rotated from an outside during the maintenance of the vehicle or the like, the rack shaft 21 moves with high speed in the "a" direction of the arrow, and a shock absorbing member 35 collides against an abutting member 33, an electric motor or each mechanism of the power transmission system are not damaged as the shock absorbing member constituting a shock absorbing mechanism 38 is elastically deformed to absorb the shock.
