PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prolong the interval of work roll exchanges to the utmost by efficiently grinding the work rolls for rolling a band-like steel strip. SOLUTION: Estimated is the pressure which the unworn regions of work rolls WR1 to WR14 receives when the regions are brought into contact with the unworn regions of the work rolls WR1 to WR14 on the other party which are arranged oppositely to each other. When the estimated pressure grows larger than a specified threshold value, the unworn regions are shifted to a position where grinding is enabled by grinding mechanisms 24, 25 to perform grinding. Thus an operation is continued without performing grinding until the work rolls WR1 to WR14 are subjected to heavy pressure. In this way, the overgrinding of the work rolls WR1 to WR14 is prevented and the changing interval of the work rolls WR1 to WR14 is prolonged to the utmost. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
