<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical pickup apparatus that is downsized and has a fast response speed for aberration correction without the need for a drive mechanism to mechanically move optical components in the optical pickup apparatus and to provide a manufacturing method thereof. <P>SOLUTION: The optical pickup apparatus is provided with: a liquid crystal element 30 the spherical aberration correcting amount of which can be adjusted by an electric signal in order to correct aberration in an optical path; and a beam expander 28 the spherical aberration correcting amount of which is fixed to a prescribed amount. Thus, the optical pickup apparatus can correct the spherical aberration by allocating the correction of the spherical aberration due to thickness error of a transparent substrate 11a to the liquid crystal element 30 and the correction of the spherical aberration caused by an optical system such as the liquid crystal element 30 and an objective lens 12 to the beam expander 28.
