PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a lowering of output by increasing the intake air quantity in the accelerating transition and low-medium speed range of a high expansion ratio cycle engine. SOLUTION: In the high expansion ratio cycle engine 1 provided with a supercharger 13, when the engine is determined to be in the accelerating transition by an accelerating transition determining means 41, the operation of a variable valve timing mechanism 30 is controlled to increase the intake air quantity.
