PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method of searching for a musical piece to accurately search for a musical piece corresponding to a required musical piece in a simple constitution. SOLUTION: The apparatus and the method of searching for a musical piece is provided with a storage means stored with chord progression musical piece data of a plurality of musical pieces and indicating the time sequential changes of chords of each musical piece, a search target data generation means for generating chord progression musical piece data to be searched for which indicate the sequential time changes of at least a part of chords of a musical piece, a comparing means for calculating the similarity of each two or more musical pieces by comparing the chord progression musical piece data to be searched for with each of chord progression musical piece data of the plurality of musical pieces stored in the storage means about the fundamental note variation of chords when changing the chords and the attributes of the changed chords, and an output means for generating a search output corresponding to a similarity calculation result of each of the musical pieces which is obtained by the comparing means.
