PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus in which multicolor display based on a back substrate with coloring particles and a coloring part is produced by using a pair of electrodes. SOLUTION: The image display apparatus 10 comprises a vertically disposed image display medium 12 and a voltage application part 14. The image display medium 12 comprises black particles 22 and white particles 24 with mutually different charge polarities sealed in between a transparent display substrate 16 and the back substrate 18. The display substrate 16 is constructed by forming a display side electrode 28 and an insulating layer 30 on a substrate 26 and the back substrate 18 is constructed by forming a backside electrode 34, the coloring part 36 and an insulating layer 38 on a substrate 32. In performing display based on the color of the coloring part 36, a first alternating voltage is applied to the display side electrode 28 by the voltage application part 14 to thereby make the particles fall down, and in concealing the color of the coloring part 36, a second alternating voltage with a frequency higher than that of the first alternating voltage is applied to the display side electrode 28 to thereby make the particles move upwards.
