PURPOSE: A UTOPIA(Universal Test and Operation PHY Interface for ATM) malfunction control method is provided to detect an abnormal physical layer processing part through a physical layer control signal outputted from an ATM layer processing part, to control the switching part of the abnormal physical layer processing part, and to determine the activation and inactivation of the abnormal physical layer processing part. CONSTITUTION: An ATM layer processing part monitors and checks the header of the data received from each physical layer processing part and judges whether an abnormal physical layer processing part exists(S30,S31). If it is detected that a specific physical layer processing part works abnormally, the ATM layer processing part creates a physical layer control signal and executes a procedure to detect the specific physical layer processing part(S32). The ATM layer processing part creates a physical layer control signal for the abnormal physical layer processing part, resets the physical layer processing part, and confirms whether the physical layer processing part works abnormally again(S33,S34). In case that the physical layer processing part continuously works abnormally, the ATM layer processing part creates a physical layer control signal and inactivates the physical layer processing part(S35).
