摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing method of a high quality digital image which prevents artifacts due to excessive amount of colorant, to reduce the colorant of a multilevel printer, to provide accurate limitation of total amount of a colorant and accurate calibration, and to provide accurate color calibration, while minimizing an appearance of an undesirable graininess or noise. <P>SOLUTION: This method is for selecting a preferred colorant control signal vector for a color output device for reproducing a desired output color. The color output device produces the output colors by using four or more colorants, wherein the amount of each colorant is controlled by the colorant control signal vector. The method comprises a step, in which a device model for the color output device relating the colorant control signal vector to the corresponding output color is determined; a step in which a set of valid colorant control signal vectors whose corresponding output color substantially matches the desired output color is determined by using the device model; and a step, in which the preferred colorant control signal vector is selected from a set of valid colorant control signal vectors, by using a cost function responsive to one or more cost attributes that vary as a function of the colorant control signal vector. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
