PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device which can analyze the reproducing state of a magnetoresistive effect head for a magnetic tape. SOLUTION: A frequency analyzing part 11 detects the output and noise of a reproduced signal outputted from an MR head 22, an output determination part 12 determines if the output exceeds a predesignated output threshold, and a noise determination part 13 determines if the noise exceeds a predesignated noise threshold. A reproducing state analyzing part 14 analyzes the reproducing state for a magnetic tape MT based on determination results from the output determination part 12 and the noise determination part 13. More specifically, analyses are performed in order to determine if the MR head 22 is normally reproducing the magnetic tape, or if the MR head 22 is off the data track to be reproduced, or if there is a spacing loss.
