PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer latex giving a paper-coating composition having excellent mechanical stability and tack preventing property of latex, exhibiting remarkably improved stick preventing property especially at a high temperature to attain excellent coating operability, exhibiting excellent coated paper properties such as adhesive strength and print gloss and developing excellent printing suitability over a wide coating operation condition and printing speed, and provide a method for the production of the composition and a paper-coating composition. SOLUTION: The copolymer latex having a gel content of≥85 wt.% by GPC measurement and a toluene-insoluble content of≥94 wt.% and giving a polymer having an acetone swelling ratio of≥200% is produced by the multi-stage polymerization of monomers containing conjugated diene monomer and ethylenic unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer at≤50°C in the presence of a molecular weight regulator (α-methylstyrene dimer, etc.) excluding mercaptan compounds.
