PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer having a high multiolefin content and a high molecular weight M<SB>W</SB>. SOLUTION: In this method, a polymer having a repeating unit derived from at least a kind of isoolefin monomer, at least a kind of multiolefin monomer and optionally another copolymerizable monomer is manufactured in the presence of at least a kind of organic nitro compound and AlCl<SB>3</SB>/water and in the absence of a compound selected from the group consisting of a vanadium compound, a zirconium halide and a hafnium halide.
