The hydroxyapatite (HA) powder, containing at least 98 wt.% of TCP (tricalcium phosphate) and less that 22.% CaO, has a size grading of 80 - 160 microns and a particle grain size of 0.3 - 3 microns. The hydroxyapatite (HA) powder, containing at least 98 wt.% of TCP (tricalcium phosphate) and less that 22.% CaO, has a size grading of 80 - 160 microns and a particle grain size of 0.3 - 3 microns. It has a porosity of below 3 %, a specific surface area of about 0.77 sq.m/g, a total heavy metal content of under 50 ppm and a surface energy of about 27.5 mV. The powder is made by mixing a solution of calcium nitrate and phosphoric acid in a reactor, filtering, dehydrating and drying the precipitate, calcinating for several hours at 800 - 1150 degrees C, and grinding and sieving to give the required grain size.
