PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately control a gas quantity by using a characteristic of an opening area being univocally determined to the gas quantity while accurately expressing the correlation between the opening area of an intake valve and the gas quantity adjusted by the opening area in constitution of controlling the operating characteristic of the intake valve based on the above correlation. SOLUTION: A request volume flow ratio TQHOST computed from request torque, twice the spitting gas quantity in valve overlap (O/L) computed based on a request residual gas rate, and the spitting gas quantity in closing timing IVC computed from the closing timing IVC of the intake valve, a valve lift amount, intake air pressure and engine speed, are added to set a request valve passing gas quantity in the intake valve, and the target operating characteristic of the intake valve is determined based on the request valve passing gas quantity.
