<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device that decides a state of a sensor element, without using complicated circuits or a control algorithm. <P>SOLUTION: This device which decides the states of NO<SB>x</SB>sensors 50 is provided with: a detecting means which finds the detected value of a prescribed characteristic regarding the resistance of the sensor element; a storage means which stores the target value of the characteristics set for each individual NO<SB>x</SB>sensor 50; and a calculating means which calculates the ratio (carry-over factor) of the detected value to the target value.
