PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display apparatus in which the operation voltage can be reduced. SOLUTION: A lower substrate 6 including a first electrode 2 and an upper substrate 16 including a second electrode 12 are disposed opposing to each other, and the space 17 between the substrates 6, 16 is divided by partitions 3 into pixels 100. Black particles 5B charged into positive and white particles 5A charged into negative are sealed in the space 17 and provided with auxiliary electrodes 4a, 4b. During display operation, a signal voltage in accordance with an image signal is applied between the first and second electrodes 2, 12 and between the first electrode 2 and the auxiliary electrodes 4a, 4b. For example, the white particles 5A move to the first electrode 2, while the black particles once move to the auxiliary electrodes 4a, 4b. Then the voltage applied between the first electrode 2 and the auxiliary electrodes 4a, 4b is stopped, which makes the black particles 5b move from the auxiliary electrodes 4a, 4b to the second electrode 12 to display a black image.
