PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To securely start an engine without using an electric motor. SOLUTION: When the engine should be started into operation, suppose that combustion is carried out with only an expansion stroke cylinder #1 which is stopped midway through the expansion stroke at that moment when the engine should be started into operation, and it is judged whether or not the engine can start with an engine output obtained by the combustion of the expansion stroke cylinder #1 using the electric motor. When it is judged to be impossible to start, adding to the expansion stroke cylinder #1, a suction valve of a suction stroke cylinder #3 stopping midway through a suction stroke is held to close the valve at that time when the engine should be started into operation, air fuel mixture is formed in a combustion chamber of the suction stroke cylinder #3, and the air fuel mixture is burned to start the electric motor using the electric motor.
