PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a planar display device further light in weight and thin in thickness without increasing its manufacturing cost largely in order to maintain its mechanical strength. SOLUTION: The planar display device is provided with: a liquid crystal display panel 1 on which a plurality of display pixels are disposed so as to construct a display screen; and a protective film FR to be fixed to the surface of the liquid crystal display panel 1. In particular, the protective film FR is patterned so as to integrally cover a region with relatively inferior mechanical strength in the liquid crystal display panel 1 and to expose regions except for this region.
