PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect dust or contamination regardless of the difference between apparatuses, in an apparatus for reading the image of an original by using an area sensor. SOLUTION: This apparatus compares reference data (gradation value) corresponding to each element of the area sensor as A/D conversion output for a reflected light from a white reference plate in a state of no dust or compensation with data (gradation value) corresponding to each element of the area sensor as A/D conversion output for a reflected light from the white reference plate before reading the original for each element. If the result of comparison is equal to or more than a predetermined gradation difference concerning image quality, reading operation is stopped. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
