PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for producing fine metal powder by gas atomization under the condition where the pressure of atomization gas is reduced. SOLUTION: In the method of producing fine metal powder using a gas atomizing method where molten metal 2 is jetted into an atomizing vessel 4 with atomizing gas 10, an atomizing gas 13 heated to the melting point of the metal or above is jetted to the flow of the molten metal, so that fine metal powder is produced. The atomizing gas 10 is fed before heating under the conditions where the pressure is controlled to 3 to 10 kgf/cm<SP>2</SP>and the flow rate is controlled to 0.6 to 1.5 Nm<SP>3</SP>/min to the flow rate of the molten metal of 1 to 2 kg/min, and the atomizing gas 10 is then heated and jetted, so that the average particle diameter of the fine metal powder 16 can be controlled to 30 to 100μm.
