The invention relates to a method for the cosmetic treatment for improving and/or for protecting the human skin, scalp and/or mucous membranes. The inventive method is characterized by topically applying a preparation, containing at least one substance that effects the modulation of proteoglycans, especially lumican and/or syndecan and/or versican and/or decorin and/or glypican and/or biglycan. The invention also relates to the use of a substance that effects the modulation of lumican and/or syndecan and/or versican and/or decorin and/or glypican and/or biglycan in the production of cosmetic agents for protecting skin aging and oxidative stress. The invention further relates to the use of the substance for producing cosmetic agents for protecting from detrimental influences through environmental pollutants and UV radiation, for boosting the functions of the dermal/epidermal junctions, and to the use of preparations for improving wound healing and against alopecia, cellulite or rosacea.
