In a process to operate an automotive piston engine having several cylinders, the engine is operated at reduced power from time to time. When the power demanded falls below a pre-determined value, the supply of air and fuel mixture is terminated to one cylinder, while adjusting the supply of fuel mixture to the remaining cylinders, thereby maintaining the torque generated. Air expelled from the shut down cylinder is discharged separately from exhaust gases.
