The air inlet manifold has a main throttle valve (11 with an actuator (14) controlled by a microcontroller (10) and having a position sensor. Inlet to the cylinders (Z1-4) is provided by four air inlet valves (L1-4). The position of these valves is determined based upon the measured air mass flow rate as given by an inlet sensor (15).
