A mattress with a border rod assembly (12) and at least one central spring core(18) is described. The border rod assembly can be manufactured as a unitary member or can be formed from individual border rods (26, 38, 40, 44, 46) and corner pieces (24) that fit together to create a contiguous border around and attached to a central mattress spring core (18). At least one of the individual border rods (38, 44, 46) includes a resilient, polymer material that can be reinforced. Border rod assemblies serve a dual purpose in mattress construction, providing both a frame to which fabrics and foams may be attached and a support structure for the central spring core. Using resilient polymer materials for the border rods allows the mattress to be used interchangeably with adjustable and non-adjustable foundations, and to be transported around obstacles, while retaining the desirable structural aspects of standard steel border rod mattresses. |
