Method for immobilizing living cells on a silicon-based substrate comprises arranging molecules of type A on the substrate and molecules of type B on the surface of the cells, then contacting the two types of molecules under conditions that allow mutual binding. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) similar method in which type A molecules are arranged on the substrate which is then contacted with cells that have type B molecules on the surface; and (2) sensor with live cells on a silicon-based substrate, where the cells have been immobilized by the new method.
