An electrical connector (10) having a housing (20) and at least one current carrying element (22) is provided. The current carrying element (22) has a first portion (24) and a second portion (26). A first biasing member (38) is mounted within the housing (20) for urging the first portion (24) and the second portion (26) outwardly. A second biasing member having a shape memory element (40) is in proximity to the current carrying element (22). The shape memory element (40) biases the first (24) and second (26) portions inwardly. The shape memory element (40) moves from a first configuration to a second configuration when heated at or above a phase transformation temperature and severs at the stress riser (42).
