An assembly discharges ammonia into automotive diesel exhaust gases from a container (2) with a remotely-controlled radiation (5) heater (4). The contains an ammonium precursor compound separated from the heating element (5) by a heat-permeable partition (8). The assembly discharges ammonium gas into a reduction catalytic converter forming part of a diesel engine exhaust system. The assembly consists of an exhaust pipe (11) coupled to a container (2) holding a charge of ammonium carbonate which discharges ammonium gas on exposure to radiant heat. The ammonium carbonate is present as pressed solid rods (3) in a chamber separated from the heating element by a partition with a nap surface. Ammonium is surrendered via a passage (10) to the catalytic converter.
