The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine (1), according to which fuel is injected into a combustion chamber (4) of a cylinder (3) of the internal combustion engine (1) during a first operating mode (HOM) and during at least one additional operating mode (SCH). The injection ensues either in the manner of a single injection or a divided injection during which a quantity of fuel to be injected is divided into two partial quantities and injected into the combustion chamber (4) at different points in time and during which the operating modes (HOM, SCH) are switched between. Before switching from the first operating mode (HOM) to the second operating mode (SCH) and/or before switching from the second operating mode (SCH) to the first operating mode (HOM), the single injection is changed to the divided injection in order to keep emissions produced by the internal combustion engine (1) low even during the switching over process.
