An energy saving water supply for a building has a water tank (14) mounted above all the consumer units, which are gravity fed from the tank. A control unit (5) monitors the water level in the tank and refills the tank as and when required from a rainwater cistern lower in the building, e.g. underground. The cistern is fitted with a submersible pump (2) to refill the water tank via a non return valve (3) and a rising duct. When the rainwater level falls below a set level the control system refills the water tank from the mains supply.
