A self propelled mower comprises a chassis 10 on which is mounted a motor 36 which drives a cutting blade 51 rotating within a chamber 12, a discharge chute 13 directing cuttings through an outlet at the rear end of the chassis 10. The chassis 10 is supported at the front end on a wheel or wheels 19 driven from the motor 36 through a drive transmission including a worm gearbox 20 supported on a hollow shaft 21 rotatably mounted to allow steering and reversing of the mower by means of a steering wheel 28 through a chain 25. Power is supplied to the gearbox 20 by an input drive shaft 29 mounted within the hollow shaft 21 and operatively connected to the motor 36. Rollers 52, (53), (54), Fig. 2 (not shown), support the rear of the chassis 10. Power transmission from the motor 10 to the gearbox 20 is by means of an intermediate shaft 31, pulleys 30, 32 supporting a belt 33 which is tensioned by an adjustable pulley 34. The pulley 32 comprises two flanges 32a, 32b adjustably urged together by a spring (not shown) in order to vary the effective diameter of the pulley 32, and hence control the speed of travel. A second belt 40 transmits power to the shaft 31 from a motor output shaft 37 via pulleys 38, 39, a pulley 42 movable through a cranked lever 43 and a rod 47 by means of a foot-pedal 45, controlling the tension of a belt 40, a spring 43a holding the pulley 42 in the non-tensioned position except when the pedal 45 is depressed. A further belt 48 transmits power from a pulley 39 on the output shaft 37 via a pulley 49 to the shaft 50 mounting the cutting blade 51, a tensioning pulley 39a being operated by a cranked lever (39b), Fig. 2 (not shown) held either in or out of operative position by a toggle spring 39c. Cuttings are received by a box 59 which may be replaced by a deflector plate; the cutting height of the blade may be altered by changing, using adjustable stops 58, the angular position of the arms 56 which support the rollers 52, (53), (54), and adjusting a rotatable stop 23 supporting the shaft 21.
