Short messages are transmitted to a service center using a data connection channel of a telephone connection. By remote programming, an authorized service center makes available to a mobile telephone, a parameterized calling number and the associated country code of the mobile radio network for the data connection, to transmit short messages. In the mobile telephone, on each transmission, the data transmission in the channel of a telephone connection is only used automatically, when the stored country code of the calling number corresponds with the country code of the mobile telephone network used. The mobile telephone automatically transmits a short message (SMS) using a conventional transmission process to the calling number of the service center, when the stored prefix country code does not agree with the country code of the mobile telephone network used on first registration in the respective mobile radio network. All parameters for use of the service center, for each message (SMS), are programmed. An Independent claim is included for the corresponding mobile telephone.
