The hydraulic valve is controlled by an electromagnet in a circuit by controlling the current in the circuit. The electromagnet is short-circuited after the current in the circuit has fallen below a threshold level. The current can be reduced continuously or in steps before falling below the threshold and is determined by measuring the voltage across a reference resistance (6) in the circuit.
