Disclosed are methods for detecting neoplastic or damaged cells and for detecting multidrug resistance in neoplastic or damaged cells by detecting a n increase in the cell surface expression of a nucleophosmin (NPM) protein on the surface of such a multidrug resistant neoplastic or damaged cells as compared to the level of expression of the nucleophosmin protein on the surface of a normal cell.
