In a safety device for hydraulic brakes of a motor vehicle a hollow receptacle body 1 having four valve ports 2 and a flanged face 10 is secured to the output end of the master cylinder 13 and the lower portions 4 of the valve ports 2 are tapered and in communication with conduits 7 which are connected to the wheel brake cylinders of the vehicle so that when the brakes and the conduits are operating normally, the hydraulic pressure of the brake fluid in inclined bores 8 keeps balls 5 pressed against the restricted portions of the bores 8 where the balls 5 are stopped in the inoperative position of the brakes as illustrated. When the brakes are operated by pressure on the foot brake pedal, brake fluid is forced into the braking system by the piston 14 of the master cylinder 13 to cause the balls 5 to be carried a limited distance up the bores 8, the balls returning to their original position when the brakes are released. Should a fracture occur in any of the conduits 7 to the wheel brake cylinders, no pressure will be developed in that pipe line when the brakes are operated and the brake fluid will be displaced under pressure into the bore 8 to bring the ball 5 into the valve port 2, thus closing the port and that of the conduit 7 leading to the faulty brakes. In this way the other brakes remain fully operable. The internal space of the receptacle is filled with brake fluid through a conduit 23 leading from a reservoir when the piston 14 is withdrawn to its extreme inoperative position.</p> |
