The microscope (1) is mounted on jointed (33) arms (31) on a column (5) standing on a firmly fastened base (27). The large objective lens (11) has a number of lamps (51) around its periphery, e.g. halogen lamps or a white light LED, aimed toward the operating field (7). The microscope includes a video display (21) and a camera (15) and has a radio link (45) to a remotely located computer (23). A microwave link (39) supplies energy to the electronic circuits in the microscope.
