A system and method for controllably separating a conduit (20) into an upper portion (20a) and a lower portion (20b). The system includes a first valve (24) in the upper portion (20a) of the conduit (20) above a point of separation (28), and a second valve (34) in the lower portion (20b) of the conduit below the point of separation (28). When the conduit (20) is separated, the valves (24,34) are actuated to cease flow therethrough and prevent loss of fluids into the seawater. A hang-off tool (32) in the lower portion (20b) of the conduit (20) engages the well (16) and supports the lower portion (20b) of the conduit (20).
