Layers (8) of a fibrous material are cut to the precise size of the disc and in sufficient numbers for production of two or more laminated discs. The layers are stacked in a compression tool(1) and impregnated with a curable polymer resin(6). Alternatively the discs may be cut from fibrous material pre-impregnated with resin and stacked in the compression tool. A compression force is applied perpendicular to the layers and the resin cured to form a bar. The bar is then cut transverse to the axis to form disc shaped preforms for final finishing. Fiber layers(8) form a stack whose height creates a compressed bar of low bending strength and high axial compressive strength. Both end faces of a cut disc preform are machined to form a disc spring. A separator may be located between two layers during the stacking operation to allow easy separation of the compressed discs. Separators may include a spacer ring and two shaped surfaces which determine the face profiles of each disc during compression. Passages through separators allow resin to flow through. Independent claims are included for the following: (a) the process equipment which includes a compression mold(1) with a cylindrical compression chamber(5) having a large height to diameter ratio; and (b) a laminated disc produced by the process.
