A mobile phone 10 is coupled by an edge connector 18 to a detector unit 20 which may include a passive infra-red sensor 22 and a remote PIR sensor 28. The combined phone and detector can be mounted inside a vehicle to respond to an intruder. When an alarm condition is detected, the phone automatically calls a preset number or stores information for later transmission. The device may be associated with a GPS receiver and may be incorporated into portable apparatus such as a computer and respond to movement or unauthorised use. Alternatively, a detector may be mechanically connected to a mobile phone by an arrangement including an electromagnetically operated plunger for pressing a preset key on the keypad of the phone.
