Herein is depicted a process for obtaining astaxanthin from a mutant strain of phaffia rhodozyma. The invention comprises obtaining mutant strains which overproduce astaxanthin in a 200% with regards to the wild strain. Likewise, a low cost culture mean called Yucalfi is depicted, which is composed of KH2PO4 2 g/l; SO4 Mg 0.5 g/l; urea 1.0 g/l and date juice from the Yucca. The Yucalfi mean increases the astaxanthin production in a 150% in relation to the YM mean. Finally, the development of a production system of astaxanthin at a bioreactor level employing a fed lot culture is described. The feeding system is automatically done in response to the natural changes of the culture PH; the change of PH culture, from acid to alkaline is the activation signal of the feeding system. The feeding system called yucafil2 comprises: date syroup in a concentration of 200-3000 g/l; urea10 g/l; KH2PO4 2 g/l; SO4Mg 0.5 g/l; and yeast extract 1.6 g/l. The additioned feeding volumes are proportional to the quantity of present cells. Under this conditions it is possible to obtain astaxanthin production of 24,000 micro grams/l and 39 g/l of biomas.
