The shunting installation has a conveying track along which a wagon conveying device (1) can travel to displace, distribute and position railway wagons. The device possesses a freely rotatable bogie. For transport, the wagon conveying device is rigidly connected to a cable (4,5) and the cable can be driven by a stationary drive in the towing and return directions. The cable consists of a towing cable and a return cable. The towing cable is rigidly connected to the wagon conveying device on a long side and the return cable on the other long side. The towing and return cables can each be wound up by motor winches (6,7) using winch drums (8,9) mounted and fixed at the ends of the conveying track. The winch drums are alternately driven on one hand in winding-up operation and on the other hand unrolled by the tension of the other motor winch in towing operation.
