PURPOSE: Provided is an air cleaner and a method for controlling operation thereof which are able to clean air by moving an air cleaning unit according to dusts distributed in the interior space. CONSTITUTION: The air cleaner comprises a main body(10), an air cleaning unit(30) installed to the main body to be able to rise and fall and having an air inlet and an air exit, a rising and falling device(60) to rise and fall the air cleaning unit, at least one dust sensor(14) detecting dusts floating around the interior space and a controller moving the air cleaning unit according to the dust distribution detected by the dust sensor. The method for controlling operation of the air cleaner comprises steps of (a) detecting dusts of the interior space by using the dust sensor; and (b) performing operation of the air cleaner by rising and falling the air cleaning unit according to the dust distribution detected by the dust sensor.
