An apparatus (122) for degassing deionized water for use in inspecting and packaging contact lenses, said apparatus comprising a vacuum chamber (144); a plurality of gas permeable tubes (124) mounted within said chamber (144) for sequentially receiving deionized water to be degassed; means for creating a pressure differential to cause said deionized water to flow through said plurality of gas permeable tubes (124); a manifold (138) for distributing said degassed and deionized water to a plurality of distribution points and a precision metering pump (140) for metering less than one ml. of degassed and deionized water at each one of said distribution points.
