PURPOSE: An apparatus for cooling hot rolling rolls is provided to automatically cool the rolling rolls of rolling mill used in hot rolling at an uniform cooling rate until thermal shape change of the rolling rolls is finished, and a method for controlling the apparatus is provided. CONSTITUTION: The apparatus comprises a motor(22) for driving upper rolling roll(20) and lower rolling roll(21) respectively; a plurality of refrigerant injection nozzles(23) for injecting refrigerant onto the upper rolling roll and the lower rolling roll respectively; a refrigerant pump(28) for supplying the refrigerant to the plurality of refrigerant injection nozzles at a certain pressure; a valve(29) for controlling flow rate of the refrigerant supplied to the refrigerant injection nozzles from the refrigerant pump; a shape measuring sensor(25) for measuring shape of the rolling rolls; a temperature measuring sensor(26) for measuring the surface temperature of the rolling rolls; and a controller(27) for determining refrigerant injection quantity and rotational speed of the rolling rolls from the shape information and surface temperature information of the rolling rolls measured from the shape measuring sensor and the temperature measuring sensor so that the refrigerant is injected onto the rolling rolls rotated by the motor from the refrigerant injection nozzles by controlling the valve and the motor, wherein the apparatus further comprises a wiper(24) for removing the refrigerant injected onto the rolling rolls by the refrigerant injection nozzles from the rolling rolls.
