A solid fuel stove, which includes, a receiver adapted to receive fuel burnt and provided with a grate spaced above the base thereof. Means for supplying primary combustion air to the upper portion of the fuel receiver such that the primary combustion air is drawn through the fuel in the receiver to a primary combustion zone in the vicinity of the grate. A secondary combustion zone opens out from the first, which includes a chamber lined with heat retaining refractory material and being connected to one end of a gas outlet flue. Also included is means for supplying secondary combustion air to the secondary combustion zone and means to heat the zone to, or greater than a predetermined temperature.
