Production of an active agent (I) having a soothing effect on the skin involves: (a) dissolving Mentha piperita (i.e. peppermint) powder in water; (b) enzymatically hydrolyzing by adding one or more enzymes at an acidic pH; (c) separating the solution and insoluble phases; and (d) concentrating the solution phase by ultrafiltration, spray-drying or lyophilization. Production of an active agent (I) having a soothing effect on the skin involves: (a) dissolving Mentha piperita (i.e. peppermint) powder in water at 50 g/l or more; (b) enzymatically hydrolyzing by adding one or more enzymes simultaneously or successively at an acidic pH; (c) separating the solution and insoluble phases by decantation, filtration or decantation; and (d) concentrating the solution phase by ultrafiltration, spray-drying or lyophilization. An Independent claim is included for the active agent (I) obtained by the process, having: (1) a solids content of 10-110 (preferably 45-75) g/l; (2) a pH of 2.0-7.0 (preferably 4.0-5.0); (3) a total sugars content of 2-30 (preferably 9-20) g/l; (4) a total phenols content of 0.2-2.7 (0.9-1.8) g/l; and (5) a phenol component profile of 38% hydroxycinnamic compounds, 23% flavones, 31% flavanones and 7% coumarin.
