A process for the preparation of a compound of formula (1) comprising: a) selectively reducing a nitrile moiety of a compound of formula (12) wherein R1 is linear or branched alkyl and Z is i) -NH2 or ii) a moiety selected from the group consisting of formula (a) or formula (b) wherein R2 is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl and R4 is linear or branched alkyl, alkoxy or aryl b) if present, hydrolyzing the moiety of formula (a), producing as a result of step (a) or step (a) and (b) a compound of formula (7), formula (9) or formula (10). c) hydrolyzing the ester and amide (including the lactam) moieties of formulae (7), (9) or (10) to give the compound of formula (1).
