A method for electrolytic production of aluminium metal from an electrolyte (E) comprises aluminium oxide, by performing electrolysis in at least one electrolysis chamber (22) containing the electrolyte and further comprises at least one inert anode (1) and at least one wettable cathode (2), where the anode evolves oxygen gas and the cathode has aluminium discharged onto it in the electrolysis process, the oxygen gas enforcing an electrolyte flow pattern upward and the produced aluminium flowing downward due to gravity, characterised in that the oxygen gas is further directed to flow into a gas separation chamber (14) arranged in communication with the electrolysis chamber (22), thus establishing an electrolyte flow pattern between the electrolysis chamber (22) and the gas separation chamber (14).
